What Is a Dental Crown?
When Is a Crown Needed?
- Heavy decay — when a filling is no longer enough
- After root canal treatment — to protect against fracture
- Cracked or broken teeth — where structural integrity is lost
- Aesthetic correction — colour, shape or size mismatches
- Bridge treatment — to replace missing teeth
- Crown over an implant — the abutment crown screwed to the implant
Types of Dental Crown
1. Zirconium Crown
The most popular modern option. A metal-free full-ceramic substructure with natural translucency.
- Price: 6,000 – 12,000 TL per tooth
- Longevity: 15–20 years
- Advantage: Natural appearance, biocompatible, no grey line at the gum margin
- Suitable area: Both front and back teeth
2. Metal-Ceramic Crown
The affordable, durable classic. Porcelain is fused over a metal substructure.
- Price: 3,000 – 7,000 TL per tooth
- Longevity: 10–15 years
- Advantage: Affordable, strong
- Disadvantage: A grey-purple line can appear at the gum margin; low translucency
- Suitable area: Back teeth (where aesthetics are less critical)
3. E-max (Lithium Disilicate)
The highest aesthetic result. A full glass-ceramic crown with outstanding translucency.
- Price: 7,000 – 14,000 TL per tooth
- Longevity: 10–15 years
- Advantage: The most natural appearance; ideal for the front teeth
- Disadvantage: More fragile than zirconium
- Suitable area: Front teeth, smile zone
4. Laminate Veneer
Aesthetics with minimal intervention. A thin porcelain shell bonded only to the front surface of the tooth.
- Price: 7,000 – 15,000 TL per tooth
- Longevity: 10–15 years
- Advantage: Very little tooth reduction; excellent aesthetics
- Disadvantage: Suitable only for front teeth
- Full guide: Laminate veneers
5. All-Ceramic Crown (Full Porcelain)
General all-ceramic options. Ceramic systems other than E-max and zirconium.
- Price: 5,000 – 10,000 TL per tooth
- Longevity: 10–15 years
- Advantage: Metal-free, good aesthetics
- Suitable area: Front and back teeth (depending on the system chosen)

Factors That Affect the Price
- Number of teeth — per-unit cost can be lower for multi-unit cases
- Material grade — monolithic vs layered zirconium
- Laboratory — digital CAD/CAM vs conventional fabrication
- Bridge work — replacing missing teeth adds to the cost
- Additional treatment — root canal treatment or a post and core will increase the overall fee
Clinical note: Our clinic offers instalment plans for multi-unit cases.
The Crown Placement Process
- Examination and planning: radiographs, shade selection, treatment plan
- Tooth preparation: the tooth is reshaped under local anaesthesia
- Impressions: precise digital or conventional impressions
- Temporary crown: fitted while the permanent crown is fabricated
- Try-in and cementation: the laboratory-made crown is tried in and, once approved, permanently bonded
Total time: 2–3 visits (5–10 days)
Which Crown Suits Which Case?

Crown Care and Longevity
With proper care, crowns last for many years without problems:
- Daily: brush twice a day plus floss
- Every 6 months: professional check-up and cleaning
- Avoid: biting hard food directly, chewing ice
- If you grind your teeth (bruxism): a night guard is essential — see Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
