Which Situations Require Emergency Dental Treatment?

1. Severe Toothache

Spontaneous, throbbing pain severe enough to disrupt sleep usually indicates inflammation of the dental nerve (pulp) or abscess formation. Immediate treatment is required in this situation.

First aid:

  • Apply a cold compress externally to the swollen area
  • Avoid lying on the affected side
  • See a dentist as soon as possible

2. Dental Abscess

An infection around a tooth or gum causes swelling, fever, and severe pain. If left untreated, there is a risk of the infection spreading.

Symptoms:

  • Swelling in the face or jaw
  • Fever
  • Bad taste or bad breath
  • Pressure sensation in the swollen area
  • Fistula (pus drainage) on the gum

Treatment: Antibiotic therapy is initiated, the abscess is drained, followed by root canal treatment or extraction as planned.

3. Broken or Cracked Tooth

A fracture or crack in a tooth can occur due to trauma, biting hard food, or bruxism.

What should you do?

  • Find the broken piece and store it in milk or saline solution
  • If sharp edges are cutting the tongue or cheek, cover them with wax or sugar-free gum
  • Schedule an emergency appointment — depending on the extent of the fracture, a filling, crown, or root canal treatment will be performed

4. Lost or Broken Filling/Crown

When an existing filling or crown falls out, the tooth tissue is exposed and becomes sensitive.

Temporary solution: You can purchase temporary filling material from a pharmacy. However, you should see a dentist as soon as possible for a permanent solution.

5. Dental Trauma (Tooth Avulsion)

If a tooth is completely knocked out (avulsion) due to impact:

  • Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root
  • If dirty, gently rinse with water (do not scrub)
  • If possible, try to reinsert the tooth into its socket
  • If you cannot reinsert it, store it in milk or saline solution
  • Reach a dentist within 30 minutes — the chance of success depends on time

6. Uncontrollable Gum Bleeding

Mild bleeding after normal brushing is common, but bleeding that does not stop on its own or heavy bleeding requires emergency evaluation.

7. Jaw Lock or Dislocation

If you cannot open or close your mouth, there may be a problem with the jaw joint. An oral and maxillofacial surgery specialist evaluation is required.

What NOT to Do in a Dental Emergency

  • Do not place aspirin on the painful area (it causes tissue burn)
  • Do not rinse your mouth with alcohol or cologne
  • Do not attempt to burst an abscess yourself
  • Do not apply warm compresses (this increases swelling)
  • Do not delay treatment — pain subsiding does not mean the problem is resolved

Our Emergency Treatment Process

  1. Telephone assessment: Describe your situation over the phone; initial first aid guidance is provided
  2. Same-day appointment: The earliest available time slot is given for emergencies
  3. Examination and imaging: Evaluation with panoramic X-ray or tomography at the clinic
  4. Emergency intervention: Pain control, abscess drainage, temporary restoration, or other treatments
  5. Permanent treatment planning: A permanent treatment plan is prepared after emergency intervention

05

Preventing Dental Emergencies

  • Have regular dental check-ups every 6 months
  • Do not skip dental scaling appointments
  • Use a night guard if you grind your teeth at night
  • Do not crack hard foods (ice, hard candy, nuts) with your teeth
  • Wear a mouth guard during sports
