Clear aligners vs braces — comparison at Derya Dental Clinic

Did You Know?

You have decided to have orthodontic treatment but you are stuck between two options: clear aligners or metal braces. Both straighten teeth — but which one suits which patient?

01

Clear Aligners or Braces? How to Choose the Right Option

In more than a decade of clinical practice, the most common mistake we see is patients choosing on appearance alone. In reality the right choice depends on the complexity of your case, your lifestyle and how consistent you can be with treatment. This guide compares both options across every dimension.

Clear Aligners: Who Are They Ideal For?

Clear aligner treatment is especially suited to:

  • Adults and professionals: Patients who are conscious of how treatment looks socially or at work
  • Mild to moderate cases: Mild crowding, gaps between teeth, small bite problems
  • Patients who prioritise oral hygiene: The tray is removed so brushing and flossing are normal
  • Patients who want a sense of control: Being able to take the aligner out before meals is a real convenience

Advantages of Clear Aligners

  • Almost unnoticeable day-to-day
  • No dietary restrictions (remove to eat)
  • Less gum irritation
  • Digital simulation lets you see the result in advance
  • You change each set at home, so fewer clinic visits

Limitations of Clear Aligners

  • Compliance is essential: If worn for less than 20–22 hours a day, treatment lengthens or fails
  • Not for severe cases: Heavy crowding, large jaw discrepancies and impacted teeth usually need braces
  • Risk of loss: Because they are removable they can be misplaced (extra cost)
  • Initial adjustment: A mild lisp on "s" sounds is common; it usually settles within 1–2 weeks

04

Metal Braces: Who Are They Ideal For?

Metal braces remain the most versatile tool in orthodontics:

  • Complex cases: Severe crowding, marked bite problems, teeth that need rotating
  • Children and growing teenagers: They are fixed so compliance is not an issue
  • Budget-conscious patients: Initial cost is usually lower
  • Patients who prefer full clinician control: The dentist manages every step; patient input is minimal

Advantages of Metal Braces

  • Can handle virtually any orthodontic case — the widest range
  • No patient compliance required; the wire stays in place
  • Adjustments are made directly by the dentist at every visit
  • Particularly effective in children and teenagers

Limitations of Metal Braces

  • Adults with aesthetic concerns may find them socially uncomfortable
  • Oral hygiene is harder; interdental brushes are essential
  • Hard and sticky foods are restricted
  • Wire irritation of the cheek and gum is common in the first weeks
  • Mild pain is normal for 2–3 days after each adjustment

Which Option for Which Situation?

Moderate crowding, high aesthetic expectationsClear aligners
Severe crowding or marked bite problemsBraces

Professional life matters, mild caseClear aligners

06

The Right Choice: Don't Decide Without an Examination

Statements on social media or search engines such as "clear aligners are right for everyone" can be misleading. An orthodontic decision should only be made after an oral examination, a panoramic radiograph and, in some cases, 3-D imaging.

At our clinic in Fındıklı Mah. Gazi Mustafa Kemal Cad. No:17-19/21, Maltepe, we can show you both options with digital impressions and simulations. Call us to book a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Which is faster — clear aligners or braces?
In mild to moderate cases clear aligners are usually quicker (6–18 months). In complex cases braces give a faster and more predictable result. Exact timing varies by patient and can only be given after an in-person assessment.
Do clear aligners hurt?
Mild pressure for 2–3 days after changing to each new set is normal. Discomfort is generally less than with braces because there are no sharp wire ends.
Are clear aligners suitable for my child?
For teenagers whose adult teeth have erupted and whose growth is largely complete, clear aligners can work well. For children who cannot reliably wear them 20–22 hours a day, braces give a more predictable result.
Can both methods be used together?
In some cases a hybrid approach is used: braces correct the heavy lifting first, and clear aligners finish off the details. This decision is entirely up to the orthodontist.
Which is the more economical option?
Braces are usually more affordable up front. However, because aligner treatment involves fewer appointments and trays are changed at home, total costs can sometimes come close.
Are there cases that cannot be treated with clear aligners?
Severe skeletal discrepancies, impacted teeth needing rotation and very heavy crowding may not be amenable to aligner therapy. In these situations braces or a combined approach is required.
How many hours a day should clear aligners be worn?
20–22 hours a day. They are removed only for eating and brushing. Under-wear lengthens treatment.
Can the treatment outcome be seen in advance with clear aligners?
Yes. A digital intraoral scan creates a treatment simulation so the predicted result can be shown in 3-D before treatment starts. See our clear aligners page for more. ---
