A dental implant is a titanium screw-shaped structure placed to replace missing teeth. These implants fuse with your jawbone and function similarly to natural tooth roots, securely supporting the prosthetic teeth placed on top. With implant treatment, you regain both the aesthetics of your smile and fully restore your chewing function. How Are Dental Implants Placed?

What Are Dental Implants? An Overview of Implant Treatment

While this treatment method is safe for most of our patients, it may not always be feasible due to certain health conditions. Therefore, a thorough evaluation process is of great importance.

Suitable Candidates for Dental Implants: Key Criteria

Certain fundamental conditions must be met for successful implant treatment outcomes:

Age and Development Status

  • Jaw development must be complete (generally over 18 years of age)
  • Bone structure must be mature enough to support the implant

Bone Condition

  • Adequate jawbone density and volume
  • Bone quality suitable for implant integration

General Health

  • Chronic conditions must be under control
  • No conditions that would negatively affect the healing process

Oral Hygiene

  • Regular dental care habits must be established
  • Periodontal disease must have been treated

Patients who meet these criteria are generally considered ideal candidates for implant treatment.

Health Conditions That May Complicate Implant Treatment

Certain health conditions can affect the success rate of your implant treatment or may require us to take special precautions:

Diabetes and Implant Eligibility

Implant treatment is possible for our diabetic patients; however, good blood sugar control is critically important. We can safely proceed with treatment when your HbA1c level is below 7. Uncontrolled diabetes can slow the healing process and increase the risk of infection. You can follow recommendations from the Turkish Diabetes Society.

Heart Disease and Implants

Patients with stable heart conditions can receive implant treatment with cardiologist approval. However:

  • If you have had a heart attack within the last 6 months, treatment must be postponed
  • If you are taking blood thinners, we can coordinate medication adjustments with your physician. The Turkish Society of Cardiology can provide information on this topic.

Bone Loss (Osteoporosis)

If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, there is no need to worry. This condition alone is not a contraindication for implant treatment. When necessary, we can augment your bone volume through bone grafting and sinus lifting procedures to safely place your implants.

Smoking and Implant Success

Smoking significantly reduces the success rate of implant treatment. Nicotine impairs blood circulation, slowing the healing process and increasing the risk of implant failure. We strongly recommend quitting smoking before treatment.

History of Radiotherapy

If radiotherapy has been administered to your jaw region, your bone blood supply may be reduced. In this case, treatment planning must be customized due to the risk of osteoradionecrosis. You can refer to recommendations from the Turkish Ministry of Health.

Immune System Disorders

If you are taking immunosuppressive medications following organ transplantation or if your immune system is compromised, we will develop your treatment plan in coordination with your specialist physician.

Absolute Contraindications for Dental Implants

Certain health conditions completely prevent implant treatment:

  • Active cancer treatment is ongoing
  • Under 18 years of age (jaw development is not yet complete)
  • Severe psychiatric conditions that prevent treatment compliance
  • Uncontrolled metabolic diseases

Our Comprehensive Pre-Treatment Evaluation Process

At our clinic in Maltepe, we conduct a detailed evaluation process for every patient:

Initial Examination and Imaging

Medical History Review

  • Detailed inquiry into existing medical conditions
  • Evaluation of current medications
  • Ordering blood tests when necessary

Oral Health Optimization

  • Priority treatment of periodontal disease if present
  • Oral hygiene education
  • Treatment of existing dental problems

Factors Affecting Implant Success

Important factors for ensuring your implants remain healthy for many years:

Oral Care

  • Daily tooth brushing and flossing
  • Use of antibacterial mouthwash
  • Regular professional dental cleanings

Lifestyle

  • Avoiding tobacco
  • Maintaining a balanced diet
  • Avoiding excessively hard foods

Regular Check-ups

  • Dental visits every 6 months
  • Early detection and intervention opportunities
  • Monitoring the health of peri-implant tissues

Alternative Solutions When Implants Are Not Feasible

If implant treatment is not suitable for you, we have alternative treatment options available:

Fixed Bridge Prostheses

  • Fixed prostheses anchored to adjacent teeth
  • A solution that provides chewing comfort
  • An aesthetic alternative

Removable Dentures

  • An economical and practical solution
  • Removable prostheses
  • Comfortable use with modern materials

Implants with Advanced Techniques

  • Specialized methods such as All-on-4
  • Techniques that provide solutions for bone deficiency
  • Less invasive approaches
